Maidstone and the Weald Liberal Democrats

Victory in Maidstone for the Liberal Democrats

11.24.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 7th May 2007

Maidstone Lib Dems sensationally buck the national and regional trend in May 3rd local elections. Tories lose one seat overall - going down from 27 seats to 26 - and continue to be denied an overall majority on Maidstone Borough Council. Liberal Democrat Group wins an additional seat and strengthens its position, going from 20 to 21 seats.

Sir Robert Worcester, founder of the polling and research firm MORI told Kent on Sunday "the result in Kent's county town was a "big blow" for the Tories."

A BIG THANK YOU: Maidstone Borough Council Liberal Democrat Group wishes to thank all those who entrusted us their vote on 3rd May. We promise to repay your trust by working tirelessly to improve local quality of life and keeping you informed through regular Focus and targeted letters.

Maidstone Borough Council is now the only council in Kent without a Tory overall majority. All 21 of us understand our responsibility as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all enlightened and progressive citizens within a County swamped by the Tory tide.
