Keep Full Maternity in Maidstone - Facebook Group9.15.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sun 27th Sep 2009
The 'Keep Full Maternity in Maidstone' Facebook group set up by Maidstone Lib Dem Peter Carroll has reached over 2,000 members. Peter set up the group only a few weeks ago as part of his campaigning efforts to stop the downgrading of Maternity services at Maidstone Hospital. Peter said, "I am pretty new to using Facebook. The success of the group is really striking. As well as the large numbers joining to show their support, many have actually posted stories of their own experiences of maternity services. Some of the postings are very upsetting and traumatic. These postings have made me even more determined to win this campaign" Peter and his team of volunteers have already hand delivered over 18,000 letters containing petition forms to households across Maidstone. Another 8,000 are expected to be delivered in the coming week. Hundreds of completed petition forms are being returned to the Maidstone Lib Dem HQ each day. Peter said, "Only by showing that the overwhelming majority of local people are against this move can hope to convince the Government to make local health bosses re-consider."
